Artist Statement:
The 110 paint swatches were sourced from a hardware store, where I learned that they are often thrown away in bulk. As a kid, anytime I went into a hardware store I couldn’t help but take swatches in my favorite colors. I had forgotten that aspect of my childhood until I started working on this project. I’ve always enjoyed using vibrant colors and cross-complementary tones in my work, it wasn’t ever for a specific reason it was just what I gravitated towards. Remembering my fascination with the bright paint swatches as a child gave me the comforting realization that I carry a piece of my younger self into what I do today.
Description:
The piece began with the different ways paint swatches could be manipulated to create a 3-Dimensional, concave form. The best approach was to create a hole on two sides of the swatch and weave a section of wire through the holes, bending the wire into a semi-circular shape. Using a piece of plywood as a base, I mapped out where a hole would be drilled and ended up with a total of 304 drill holes. The lineform consists of 184 drill holes, 92 pieces of wire and 92 swatches ranging from blue to green. The circular shapes involved 120 drill holes, 60 pieces of wire and 18 paint swatches ranging from red to yellow.
